All you need to know about iOS 12

Apple has launched its new iOS on WWDC 2018 held at San Jose Convention Centre. As speculated by the rumors this version of iOS is totally based only on fixing the bugs and enhancing the performance of iOS and making it very stable as in iOS 11 many users have faced many bugs and created a bad name on Apple.

With iOS 12 we are not only getting performance updates and stabilization, we are getting a few new features like
  • Group FaceTime
  • Memoji
  • AR Kit 2
  • Measure app
  • Search Suggestions in Photos
  • Shortcuts to Siri

We'll be discussing these features soon below.

Performance Improvements

With iOS 12, we are getting a lot of improvements in the performance section, especially for the old devices. Its told that apps and the share sheet will load 2x faster than it was in iOS 12. These were tested under stressed conditions.

Its also found that the opening of apps and camera is 50 % and 70% faster than it was previously.
So we may see some performance improvements in the latest and greatest release of iOS.

AR Kit 2

AR kit opened up a lot of possibilities for many app developers and it gained a huge support. Now with AR Kit 2 lot of improvements have been made and multiplayer support has been added to this. Real world object detection, sending of AR images through messages and opening of the same images in safari are some great improvements to be noticed.

Animoji updates

Animoji has been a great feature and now it also got an update as it got 4 new animojis namely T-rex, Koala bear, Tiger, and Ghost. These Animojis can be used on messages and on FaceTime calls.
Another new feature added to the animojis is Tongue Detection. When you stick out your tongue it also shows its tongue. Now you can also record videos using animojis up to 30 seconds.

Group FaceTime calling

Now here comes the feature for which we've waited for a long time. Group FaceTime is finally out on iOS 12. Group FaceTime is now possible with up to 32 people. Users can now start a group FaceTime call from an already existing group thread or join in an existing ongoing call.

Everyone who is in the Group FaceTime session will appear in a tile. Once someone starts speaking, that user’s tile will increase in size automatically. Or you can double-tap the person you would like to see close up.

Memoji

Memoji is a new feature that allows you to create an Animoji for yourself. You can customize hairstyle, skin tones, facial hair, headwear, eyewear, etc. Essentially, Memoji makes it possible to create an Animoji that matches your personality and mood.

Siri Shortcuts

With Siri shortcuts, Siri has become more and more intelligent. Now you can use your own custom phrase to make Siri do things.  You can now create your own custom phrase like Heading Home to make Siri navigate you to your home while setting the thermostat at your home making sure that its ready while you reach there.

While some shortcuts are offered by the apps themselves you can also program and create your own Siri Shortcut. This can be done by using the Siri Shortcuts app on the phone.

Measure App

In iOS 12 you can now measure anything in the real world using your iPhone. This is possible due to the advancements in AR Kit. The measure app on iOS 12 now lets you measure anything on the real world using your iPhone's camera. You can now easily measure anything and copy its dimensions to your phone for future reference.

Search Suggestions in Photos app

Now you can search for multiple search keywords in the photos app and also now there's a new For You tab in the photos app where you can find all your memories, the photo of the day and many other things.

The photos app also suggests you to share your photos to your contacts who are on that photo and also suggests them to send the photos that were taken on that day on that place so that you can get the entire photo collection of that day.

Many other features were also found in iOS 12 but these were the key features in it. The developer beta is now available and the public beta will be released soon. However, you can also install the developer beta now. A separate guide for it will be posted soon.

The stable and final version of iOS 12 will be released only near September. So that's a long way to go.
